Bio
Stephen R. Smoak is a Camden native and 1996 graduate of Furman University. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review.
He joined the law firm in 2000 becoming a partner in 2003 and practices in the areas of civil and domestic litigation, handling matters for both plaintiffs and defendants. Stephen has extensive trial experience in the circuit courts and family courts of South Carolina. He also handles real estate and probate matters. Stephen currently serves as Town Attorney for the towns of Kershaw and Bethune.
Stephen is one of only two individuals in history to have served on both Kershaw County Council and Camden City Council, having been a member of Kershaw County Council from 2006-2014 and Camden City Council from 2016-2024. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County. Stephen was previously the Board Chairman for Habitat for Humanity of Kershaw County. Stephen has been President of the Kershaw County Bar Association and the Kiwanis Club of Camden; a board member for the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments; and a board member of the Kershaw County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs. He and his family have been active in the local education community for decades.
Outside of the office, Stephen enjoys time spent with his wife and four children. He can be found many weekends at his childrenโs soccer and volleyball tournaments all over the Southeast. He also enjoys golf although his game is a work in progress.
